IT'S SPELLED STRAIT EDGE CYCLIST?

A lot of people when they see the spelling Strait Edge Cyclist think that I spelled it wrong, so I thought I would explain the name and why I used it. Since my cycling and work is built in part on living a substance free and sober life style, I thought that it would be fitting when choosing a name that reflected this. Straight Edge started originally as a song called “Strait Edge” by Minor Threat. This song came out of the punk scene in 1985 and was what singer Ian MacKaye described as a rejection of a “nihilistic, self destructive” requirement to be in punk rock. Here are the lyrics;

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and f^% my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white sh&^ up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's just something I don't need

I've got the Straight Edge!

I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and smoke dope
'Cause I know that I can cope
Laugh at the thought at eating ludes
Laugh at the the thought of sniffing glue
Always gonna keep in touch
Never gonna use a crutch

I've got the Straight Edge!
I've got the Straight Edge!
I've got the Straight Edge!
I've got the Straight Edge!

As this movement began to gain traction, this quickly became the battle cry of people all around the world who chose a life of sobriety.

So how does spelling it Strait come in?

Here is the definition of a strait;

1. a narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two other large areas of water.

2. used in reference to a situation characterized by a specified degree of trouble or difficulty.

3. Archaic. a narrow passage or area.

So I chose this spelling for three main reasons. One was because it tipped the hat to the ideals of the Straight Edge movement that I grew up with. Another reason was because a life of sobriety is difficult to navigate and there is a strait and narrow path that must be taken, any other direction is the wrong one. Last is that I liked the idea that a strait is a land mass and cycling is a very natural and earthy sport. So that’s it strait up… I know that was corny, don’t judge me.
